Matthias Müller is a versatile trombonist. If you have heard much of his work you have likely also noticed his proclivities toward patient extended techniques and a breathy, buzzing minimalism. On +Q, Müller joins bass clarinetist Michał Giżycki for an exploration of gurgling swamps, irregular drones and almost sterile acoustic landscapes. The subtlety of tones, the faint on-and-off underlying drones and the crackling textures on these two tracks - + and Q – evoke some underlying electronics, but all sounds are coming straight from Müller and Giżycki’s horns.
These pieces have some direction, or at least a gradual crescendo in volume and sound density, and they explore similar terrain as Nate Wooley has in his solo work, albeit with less hush and more pulse. Aesthetically, +Q is a wonderful pair of quizzical duets. It does not hurt, however, to listen closely a few times to tease out the finer notes and, above all, some crumbled but tender circular breathing, especially on the part of Müller. At 30 minutes, this is a short one, but one that also yields new striations and other small surprises with each new listen.

The first album from TORF is a results of the first session
of duo recorded between gigs of Spontaneous Music
Festival, which took place at Dragon, Poznan, in October
2021.
For me there three important aspects of this recording:
1) The quality of music. The duo plays two tracks - the
highlight is the opening nearly 20 minutes long "+",
described perfectly by Andrzej Nowak above. It is a
kind of free improvised minimal music, with repetitive
sounds, yes spectacularly enriched by "solos" of
both instruments. It is free minimalism, but diferent
from anything I heard before. Both musicians
show technical mastery not from this world, as well
as emotional engagement. The second track "Q"
lasts only 9 minutes and follows similar concepts,
but is more peaceful and lyrical, and in a sense more
beautiful.
2) Establishment of TORF. The album established the
new avantgarde label, hopefully for the long time.
TORF starts from the super high artistic level, and
noblesse oblige. As we will see the label keeps the
promises of the first relase amazingly well!
3) Promotion of Michal Gizycki to the Champions
League. Finally, this is yet another element of promotion
of the young Michal Gizycki to the absolute
world class of improvising clarinet players. He
is joining the Champions League of Ken Vandermark,
Theo Jörgesmann, Rudi Mahall, Michael Marcus, or Polish
Pantheon of Jerzy Mazzoll, Mikolaj Trzaska, Piotr Melech,
Waclaw Zimpel, Michal Górczynski, Pawel Szamburski,
Piotr Michalowski, Mateusz Rybicki... This is, in particular, because
he is here an equal footing partner of one of the
world Leaders of the avantgarde trombone, Matthias
Müller!

Muzykę otwarcia tworzą tu dwa drony dźwięków, płynących wprost z głębokiej ciszy. Przemieszczają się mrocznym korytarzem, łapią się wilgotnych ścian, konsekwentnie brną jednak do przodu. Słyszymy pracę wentyli i dysz, ich oddechy i chwile trwogi. Paleta dźwięków systematycznie się powiększa, jakby instrumenty nadymały się kolejnymi porcjami powietrza, jakby przybywało kratek wentylacyjnych w tym długim tunelu. Oddechy cyrkulacyjne, bezgraniczne płuca i prosta mechanika instrumentów stworzonych z blachy i drewna. Te ostatnie też oddychają i łączą się z ciałami muzyków. Puzon podąża jednośladem, klarnet faluje jak na huśtawce. W obu tubach zaczyna powali gotować się woda. Nim upłynie 10 minuta muzycy zdają się pokonywać pierwsze wyraźne wzniesienie. Zaczynają śpiewać i wzdychać, pełni romantycznej autorefleksji. Kolejne dwie minuty decydują o tym, iż stają w obliczu ciszy niemal zupełnej. Rezonują, szumią, szeleszczą. Puzon tańczy na falach radiowych, klarnet kołysze się na wietrze. Nowy wątek tworzą z innego budulca - szukają ukrytych fraz pełnych metafizycznej melodyki, ale i subtelnych refleksji. Na finał łapią kolejną cyrkulację w rozgrzane już płuca.
Na starcie drugiej, nieco krótszej improwizacji, muzycy proponują mały konkurs – kto zagra delikatniejszy dźwięk. Ale w tej grze nie ma zwycięzców. Przedechy, pomruki, szumy. Gadają ze sobą jak borsuki na popołudniowej przechadzce, syczą jak węże w gorącym słońcu. Zdaje się, że celebrują każdy oddech – swój i instrumentu. Gdy zbyt blisko podchodzą do ciszy, zaczynają nagle podśpiewywać i śmiać się od ucha do ucha. Szukają detali, z drobiazgów budują cały swój świat. Mikro-parsknięcia i nano-salwy ekspresji. Krótsze i dłuższe narracje, zdania urywane w pół słowa i szelmowskie przeciągnięcia. Na zakończenie definitywnie śpiewają, wszak spędzili ze sobą urocze pół godziny.
