Michał Joniec - metal rubbish universe
Michał Giżycki - tenor saxophone, bass clarinet

Second session of Poznań-based duet recorded at amazing sounding basement in Poznań.

An intense, deep trip through the microcosms of the tenor saxophone, basklarnet, tubular bells, sheet metal sheets, chewed drum plates, fan covers, pot lids and who knows what other damage. Perfect for a strange Sunday tea.

REVIEWS:

Maciej Lewenstein:

They start with 14 minutes long "S", which illustrates very
well the concept of this very abstract music. Gizycki
uses here the tenor saxophone and shows that is is also
one of the most interesting young voices on this instrument.
His use of efects and "fake" sounds reminds me
of the usic of Don Malfon. Drumming and percussion
work of ||hun|| is exquisite. The second track "#" lasts
11 minutes, and is notable for amazing use of gongs and
bells. It is a more peaceful, minimalist tune, with Michał Giżycki
playing the bass clarinet. The third track "O" lasts
nearly 11 minutes and keeps also the minimal music tranquil
mood, but is played on tenor. The highlight is the
closing nearly 17 minutes long "R", a true masterpiece of
bass clarinet improvisations, supported by super holistic
percussion lines.
This duo is for me clearly one of the most important
musical and, in general, artistic discoveries of the year
2022.

Nick Ostrum ( freejazzblog.org ):

S#0 is the latest recording by the duo of Michał Joniec and Michał Giżycki. Giżycki expands his toolbox to include a tenor saxophone in addition to the bass clarinet he tangled around Müller’s brass on +Q. Joniec deploys what is simply called his “metal rubbish universe,” an apt term for the understated clatter that strings throughout these four pieces. The result is terribly abstract and, as far as I understand, wholly improvised, but lively.

Giżycki leans towards clucks, short strings of sixteenth notes, and other fractured phrasings, though he remains intent on playing with and within silence, as well. He even turns toward extended sections of gnarled circular breathing whose affinities with Evan Parker are unmistakeable. It is this balance that makes Giżycki’s performance on this release truly noteworthy.

Joniec meanwhile busies himself with whatever metallic array of lost, discard, found, and repurposed implements he has in front of him. I am not sure what if any of this rubbish is traditionally considered percussion, but that just adds to the mystery and the soft dynamics cause the listener to really squint to hear isolated and muffled clanks, or maybe just implied sounds, and to disentangle the percussive objects from the instruments, which is as false a distinction as that between atonal, nonmelodic yet intentional noise and music. Another fine release.

Andrzej Nowak ( spontaneousmusictribune.blogspot.com ):

Muzykom przyświeca idea minimalizmu i skrupulatności. Choćby ten, gdy saksofon zaczyna prezentować swoje hydrauliczne atrybuty, a gar-kuchnia tuż obok ściele mu akustyczny dywan do zmysłowych medytacji.

Beauty headphones music!

Początek kolejnej części albumu wyznacza mechanika saksofonu i drżącego metalu. Drobne frazy budują gęstą sieć powiązań. Po kilku głębszych oddechach dęciak z mikro fraz kreśli smukle, dronowe fale, po czym gaśnie w mroku ciszy. Wszystko zaczyna tu rezonować - instrumenty, dwa ludzkie ciała i głucha przestrzeń. Tymczasem saksofon kreuje coraz dłuższe frazy, a metaliczny stelaż oplata go niczym stonogi pajęczak.

Towarzyszące im dźwięki przypominają inside percussion, cokolwiek to znaczy w skołatanej głowie recenzenta.
