TORF comes this time with a live recording, realised
by Rafal Smolinski at "Mlodsza Siostra" in Warsaw on
May 2022. The quarter include several young lions of
the free jazz scene, who can be associated with various
communities. Michal Malota is mostly connected to the
warsaw scece and collaborations with Wojtek Traczyk.
Jan Malkowski by Rafaª Smoli«ski at "Mªodsza Siostra"
in Warsaw on May 1, 2022 has records with Ray Dickaty
(Warsaw) in Infant Joy Quintet, with Rdza (Bodgoszcz/
Poznan), the duo Skerebotte Fatta with Dominik
Mokrzewski, and Warsaw Improvisers Orchestra. Wojtek
Traczyk (see the entry below) has records with Waclaw
Zimpel To Tu Orchestra (Pozna«/Warsaw), Hubert Zemler's
Musiquette (Warsaw), and couple of solo albums. Finally,
Michal (Miahcl) Kasperek collaborated on albums with the
mentioned Infant Joy Quintet, Piotr Melech, and Warsaw
Improvisers Orchestra.
On the TORF album they present a kind of suite
in 6 movements. The main attraction here consists of
dialogues and conversation of the two (dierent) saxophones,
supported by the magnicent section. They
start with "Intro", a four minutes along hymn in John
Coltrane-Pharaoh Sanders-Archie Shepp-David S. Ware
style. It smoothly transforms itself into nearly 7 minutes
long "Magenta", starting as another hymn, but this time
longer, becoming a bluesy track with slowly walking bass
motif. Soprano-tenor dialogue is breath taking. The next
is nearly 17 minutes long "Indigo", which starts with a
quite abstract saxophone conversation, and great bowing
of Wojtek. The mood augments to reach the st climax,
supported by powerful drumming of Michal Kasperek,
followed by a beautiful bowed double bass solo. Michal is
then joined by Jan and another Michal. Powerful drumming
leads to another climax in the 8th minute. This
intensive and expressive moods keeps going for several
minutes, developing support for a great soprano solo of
Jan. The second, tenor saxophone joins and both reed
played lead to nal climax and end of the track. "Ochre"
is a little short and lasts "only" 11 minutes. But, for me
this is another highlight: it starts more like a marching
song, and then develops into a peaceful and slow hymn,
played by the two saxophones, with a rather delicate support
of the drums and bass. In the sixth minute, alto
starts a Coltrane-style motifs, with tenor ornaments and
more expressive support of the section. This becomes
an abstract collective free improvisation, tranquilized by
the double bass bowing. The suite ends with the short
"Turquoise", another slow hymn and perhaos the most
traditional and the most beautiful song of the album. Finally,
probably as encore, "Coda": a duo of the two saxophones:
the tenor and the alto, peaceful and melancholic,
and again majestic like hell!
For me, one of the best Polish free jazz records of 2022!!!

Aylerowska swoboda i melodyka, medytacyjna struktura narracji i dramaturgiczna nieśpieszność budują w Młodszej Siostrze nastrój, kreują klimat free jazzu w jego definitywnie korzennej formule. Jeśli czegoś nam brakuje do pełni wolnego szczęścia, to małych, ognistych eksplozji, które świetnie konstruowany przez artystów suspens przekuwałyby w krwiste emocje fire music.

Otwarcie przypomina poranne śpiewy po ciężkiej, zakrapianej smutkiem nocy. Ognista smuga cienia wije się wokół muzyków i dość szybko przenosi ich w drugi epizod koncertu. Więcej trwogi i desperacji, popartej nerwowym rytmem perkusji, buduje nastrój oczekiwania na pierwsze emocje. Post-bluesowy posmak stawia tu pytania, a ewolucja do stanu kolektywnego free jazzu daje nieśmiałe odpowiedzi. Muzycy nie eskalują tempa, zwłaszcza saksofoniści, którzy lubią kumulować myśli i słowa w barokowych niemal onomatopejach. Zresztą trzeci odcinek tej podróży, po kwartetowym otwarciu, oddaje pole tłusto brzmiącemu smyczkowi na gryfie kontrabasu. Sytuacja nabiera na powrót dynamiki dzięki aktywnemu drummerowi, który wrzuca piąty bieg nie bacząc na dramaturgiczną pozę pozostałych muzyków. Saksofony nie idą jednak na szczyt, ale leją się przez ręce strumieniami post-melodii. Na zakończenie tej części koncertu dostajemy trio z sopranem w roli mąciciela wiecznego spokoju. Czwarta odsłona, to emocjonalna huśtawka. Perkusja kłębi się w sobie z emocji, nerw narracji dygocze, ale improwizacja jakby stała w miejscu, a dywagacje dętych przybierały na sile. Głębszy tryb oddechu wrzuca teraz tenor, który brudnym tembrem sugeruje dalszy kierunek narracji. Reszta idzie z nim jak w ogień. Najlepszy moment koncertu zastyga pod jarzmem wystudzonego smyczka. Ostatnie dwie krótkie improwizacje, to rodzaj koncertowej kody. Najpierw w kwartecie, potem w saksofonowym duecie - zmysłowe, meta melodyjne, dobrze stłumione niemal do ostatniego dźwięku.
